Shannon Kimberly Edwards is a digital literacy and data privacy advocate, writer, and author of AI for Families: Ultimate Guide to Mastering AI. With more than two decades of tech industry experience across the US and Europe, she helps families navigate artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in their daily lives.
Shannon has appeared on news programs around the world, including BBC, CNBC, CNN Worldwide, Sky News, Fox News, and MSNBC discussing technology's role in commerce, society, and everyday life. She's been quoted as an expert in publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, USA Today, The Times, Le Monde, and Forbes, and served as a HuffPost UK contributor sharing insights on consumer technology trends and our increasingly digital world.
As a Certified Ethical Emerging Technologist (CEET) with certifications in data privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible AI, Shannon works as an advisor on AI adoption and data privacy. Through her Substack publication AI for Families™, she provides practical guidance for parents and caregivers navigating AI technologies.
Fundamentally, her work is grounded in a core belief that artificial intelligence cannot exist without diverse, meaningful data from all of humanity—making every person a stakeholder in how AI develops and gets used.
Shannon holds a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University and lives in New York City with her husband and two teenage daughters.
Much of my work today focuses on AI adoption, education and adovacy. So, I like to share my personal position and philosophy around AI innovation. And its a very simply one:
We need every single human talking about AI, debating its best use, advocating for and against it in schools, at work, and in government, and weighing in on its longterm risk and possibility.
We need all of society to feel that they have a voice here. Because a technology built to mimic humans (and using our data) can only work if you and your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintences, etc. talk about it.
So while I do advocate for good data privacy practices, individual automony, and am firmly against surveillance, I also love good faith arguments and debate, and respect all opinions. At the end of the day, there is no AI without all of us.
